In recognition of America 250/Colorado 150, CML is collecting interesting facts about Colorado's cities and towns. This week we are featuring Crestone.

Can you tell us about the founding of your town? Why is your community located where it is?

The Town of Crestone was established in the late 1800s as a small mining and ranching community in the San Luis Valley. Its location at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains made it a natural hub for early settlers seeking access to water, grazing land, and mineral resources.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Crestone experienced a unique transformation when a large land donation in the surrounding Baca Grande area attracted a diverse group of spiritual and religious organizations. Today, Crestone is known for its blend of historic roots and contemporary spiritual communities, all set within one of the most geographically striking landscapes in Colorado.

Are you known for anything in particular?

Crestone is widely known as one of the most spiritually diverse communities in North America, with numerous spiritual centers, retreat spaces, and sacred sites representing traditions from around the world.

While small in population, the town has built a reputation for resilience, creativity, and community-driven initiatives. Crestone has also been at the forefront of conversations around sustainable living, land stewardship, and rural community innovation.

Are there any local history museums or landmarks in your community that you would like more people to know about?

The Crestone Museum is a key cultural and historical resource, offering insight into the town’s early mining and ranching days as well as its later evolution into a spiritual destination.

In addition, the surrounding area includes numerous spiritual centers, hiking trails, and access points to the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness. The nearby Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is also a significant regional landmark, drawing visitors from around the world and contributing to the broader story of the San Luis Valley.

Please share any fun facts, funny stories, or interesting tidbits!

Despite its small size, Crestone is home to an incredibly diverse population with a wide range of backgrounds, beliefs, and talents. It’s not uncommon to attend a town event where artists, ranchers, spiritual practitioners, and public servants are all gathered in the same space.

Crestone is also known for its strong sense of community and creativity. From local markets and events to grassroots projects, residents consistently find ways to support one another and contribute to the town’s unique identity.

And perhaps most notably, Crestone sits beneath some of the darkest skies in Colorado, making it an incredible place for stargazing and a reminder of just how connected this small town is to the natural world around it.
