Nearly 100 municipal elected officials, staff, and youth commissioners traveled to Washington, DC, March 15-18 for the National League of Cities (NLC) Congressional City Conference (CCC). They joined thousands of local leaders from across the country to advocate for key priorities facing municipalities.

On the first day of the conference, the NLC board, advocacy committees, and constituency groups met. Colorado has significant representation on committees and councils and three members on the NLC board. CML Vice President Laura Weinberg, mayor of Golden, serves on the NLC board along with Tracy Engerman, Castle Pines mayor. Jan Kulmann, Thorton mayor, also serves on the board by virtue of chairing NLC’s Energy, Environment, and Natural Resources (EENR) Committee.

For the next two days there were conference sessions on federal issues and federal funding programs and attendees were able to meet with officials from federal agencies and Members of Congress. Attendees from Colorado had the opportunity to meet with members and staff of Colorado’s House delegation, including Reps. Gabe Evans and Jason Crow. On the last day of the conference, Colorado members traveled to Capitol Hill for a breakfast meeting with both Sen. John Hickenlooper and Sen. Michael Bennet.

Many Colorado attendees then joined more than 1100 local leaders for NLC’s annual Hill Day that created additional opportunity for attendees to meet with their congressional representatives and staff. NLC’s Hill Day provided participants with the opportunity to talk about local projects that benefitted from federal funding, as well as advocate for NLC priorities, such as the BASICS Act and 21st Century Road to Housing Act introduced by Congress just before CCC.

CML would like to extend special gratitude to the following sponsors for supporting League events as part of CCC: Ameresco, Cigna, and Brownstein, Hyatt, Farber & Shreck.
