Every student deserves a safe ride to and from school. Yet when drivers illegally pass a stopped school bus, they put students at risk in the moments when they are most vulnerable: getting on and off the bus.
BusPatrol partners with municipalities, school districts, and law enforcement agencies to help communities address that challenge and encourage safer driving. Our turnkey stop-arm safety program brings together purpose-built camera technology, secure evidence management, violation processing, reporting, public education, and ongoing operational support.
The goal is simple: change driver behavior and make roads safer for students.
For municipalities, BusPatrol provides a practical way to implement and manage these programs without adding significant administrative burden to local teams. We support communities from planning through launch and beyond, including equipment installation and maintenance, evidence review, law-enforcement coordination, community education, and program reporting. Where permitted, programs may also use a violator-funded model that supports operations without requiring an upfront investment from taxpayers.
Building safety programs around public trust
Effective safety programs depend on more than technology. Communities need to understand how that technology works, how information is handled, and who remains accountable for its use.
Privacy, transparency, and local oversight are built into BusPatrol’s approach. The system is designed specifically to support school-bus stop-arm safety, not general vehicle surveillance. Rather than continuously transmitting routine footage, only footage associated with a potential stop-arm violation is transmitted for review.
Program data is encrypted in transit and at rest, with access protected through role-based permissions and multifactor authentication. Authorized law-enforcement personnel review evidence for enforcement purposes. BusPatrol does not pool or sell program data or share it beyond parties authorized under signed agreements.
Municipal and district partners retain ownership and control of their data. Retention schedules can be configured around applicable law, local policy, and evidentiary needs. Non-violation footage is overwritten or deleted, while violation-related records are retained only as long as necessary for authorized purposes.
A new opportunity for Colorado communities
Colorado communities now have an expanded framework for putting these programs into action. HB25-1230 became law in 2025, allowing communities to consider locally governed automated stop-arm enforcement programs.
Local leadership remains central to implementation. Depending on the community, municipalities may need to establish the authority, procedures, and safeguards necessary for a program. BusPatrol works alongside elected officials, municipal leaders, law enforcement, school districts, transportation professionals, and community partners to help communities understand program requirements and develop an approach that reflects local needs.
Successful school-bus safety programs are built on strong partnerships, community education, responsible data practices, and clear accountability. By bringing those pieces together, BusPatrol helps communities address dangerous driving, encourage safer habits, and build lasting public trust.
