HB26-1071: YOUR SUPPORT IS RESPECTFULLY REQUESTED

WHAT DOES THE BILL DO?

House Bill 26-1071, Local Government Vehicle Identification System on Interstate Highways, improves road safety and helps invest in vulnerable road user projects by allowing local governments to deploy speed cameras on federal interstates in coordination with the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT). Currently, local governments can use Automated Vehicle Identification Systems (AVIS) on their own roadways as well as state highways in cooperation with CDOT. This bill expands that authority to include federal highways while maintaining all current statutory safeguards.

WHY YOU SHOULD VOTE YES

  • HB26-1071 is a permissible bill that supports road safety and vulnerable road users, two major priorities for
    local governments
  • HB26-1071 discourages dangerous driving to reduce deadly crashes on interstate highways
  • Local governments and CDOT already use this technology to deter speeding on municipal roadways and
state highways – HB26-1071 simply expands that authority to federal interstates
  • HB26-1071 helps communities invest in infrastructure for pedestrians and bicyclists and other priority
    projects

YOUR SUPPORT IS RESPECTFULLY REQUESTED

CML respectfully requests your SUPPORT on HB26-1071. AVIS technology is not used to track individuals’ locations or aid law enforcement in arrests; it is narrowly deployed to detect speeding in designated AVIS corridors and issue citations accordingly. This expanded use of AVIS will help make interstate highways safer by decreasing speeding and reducing the high incidents of accidents to which local law enforcement must respond. CML urges you to support this common-sense road safety tool.
