CML Listserv Rules & Guidelines

The purpose of the listserv is to share information and provide networking between municipal professionals across the state who are current members of CML. The following are the rules and conditions of participation in CML listservs.

Content

Messages sent to a listserv should pertain to the particular listserv. Please do not send messages to the listserv that are not related to a municipal issue or that are not respectful of CML’s mission to support Colorado municipalities. Listserv postings are not permitted to be forwarded to anyone outside of the subscribed users.

Think about your audience

Only send a message to the entire list when it contains information that everyone may find beneficial. Your posting will be distributed to many busy people. Please consider whether your post will add to the discussion in an informative way that will be of value to others, or whether it is best to send it privately. Please refrain from posting “thank you,” “me too”, or personal comments that are directed only to the individual who sent the email.

Check the “To:” field

Before you send your message, check the “To:” field to determine if your message is addressed to the whole list or just the sender of the email. When replying to a message, determine if you intend for the reply to go to the entire listserv or only to the person who posted the question. When you hit “reply” to the listserv email, the entire list will receive your reply.  If you want to reply only to the person who sent the message, copy and paste their email address and forward the email reply.

Use the subject line

Make the subject line descriptive so that recipients have a flavor of the message from glancing at the subject line. This allows members to respond more appropriately and makes it easier for members to search the archives by subject.

Include your name and municipality

To preserve the integrity of the listserv, please include the name of the municipality you represent. It is good practice to include a few lines at the end of your message indicating your name and email address. If you are uncomfortable naming the municipality due to the nature of the question, know that your question may not be answered unless you have adequately identified yourself as a municipal official.

To search for past listserv topics, use the process below:

  1. Go to list.cml.org.
  2. Click Log In (top right part of screen).
  3. Log in (if you know your password) or click Register Password (if you don’t).
  4. Once you’re logged in, you’ll see an option to Search Archives (on the left; you may have to scroll down to see it).
  5. Type in the text string you want to search for.

Language

Users may not use language or post content that is, including but not limited to, unlawful, harassing, abusive, defamatory, obscene, scandalous, inflammatory, pornographic or profane, or otherwise unprofessional. Users also should be cautious with humor and sarcasm.

Responsibility and warranties

Users acknowledge that they are responsible for the information they submit and have full responsibility for the posting, including its legality, reliability, appropriateness, originality, and copyright. CML accepts no responsibility for opinions and information posted on the listservs. CML disclaims all warranties with regard to information posted on this site. In no event shall CML be liable for any damages resulting from or in connection with the use of information posted on this site. Posts to the listserv are not legal advice (even if posted by an attorney), and they are not a substitute for consulting one’s own attorney. CML bears no responsibility for the opinions or information posted on the listserv, or their accuracy. The use of CML listservs does not create attorney-client relationships. CML makes no warranties regarding the confidentiality of messages sent to the listserv. Users cannot assume that confidential or sensitive information will remain so.

Copyright

Users may not post information or other material that is protected by copyright or use any words, logos, or other marks that would infringe upon a trademark or other intellectual property rights without permission of the owners.

Advertising

Commercial use of the listserv is prohibited. The list may not be used for solicitation purposes or advertising. Notice of conferences, training, and webinars should be submitted to the list moderator for approval prior to posting.

Misuse

CML reserves the right to terminate, at its discretion, without prior notice, the listserv access of any user for failure to abide by these rules and guidelines, or for any other reason.

Listserv posts are intended to be used for the benefit of municipalities, and CML reserves the right to remove users who misappropriate information exchanged on this listserv.

CML reserves the right to modify or discontinue the lists at any time. The lists of subscribers also will be audited periodically to maintain the security and integrity of the lists for the benefit of the members.

Do not send administrative emails (such as “remove me from the list”) to the entire listserv; instead, contact the manager of the list or contact CML. Lists are only for staff and officials representing municipalities that are current members of CML. If you no longer represent a municipality, it is your responsibility to unsubscribe from this list.
